Sims Public Library, Waxahachie, TX
The Sims Public Library was originally built in 1905 but it could no longer meet the needs of the community. There was no longer room for the book collection and there was not enough room for additional computers and reading areas. The estimated cost to enlarge the library to accommodate the book collection and add a new computer center was over $6 Million. The city did not have those resources and considered de-funding the library instead.
David Price and Averus Corporation were hired as consultants to review the library’s needs and recommend solutions to save the library. He demonstrated how the library could be repurposed with new spaces and new furnishings and how the book collection could be reduced to a size the building could accommodate, all for less than 10% the cost to enlarge the library. Then he hired Trinity Library Resources to execute the plan.
Reduce the book collection from 160,000 volumes to under 100,000 volumes. Old shelving was replaced with new, higher capacity shelving that required less floor space.
Create new reading areas and computer centers in the spaces previously occupied by books and shelving. Computer capacity was doubled and the majestic 1905 reading room was restored to its original use. The original tin ceiling was restored and repainted. New modern LED lights were installed to improve lighting in the main access areas and period lighting from the 1920’s was sourced and installed. The essence of the Renaissance Revival era was captured yet new services, extensive new reading areas, more technology, a new teen library and children’s library were added to meet the needs of the growing community.
Restore and refinish original wood floors. Repaint and re carpet the library to enhance the new furnishings. Modernize old spaces into new spaces. Add new furnishings that blended with the existing collection of priceless antique furnishings in the library.
The Sims Public Library now meets the community’s library needs and is an architectural showplace once again.
